National English Honors Society
About the National English Honor Society
The National English Honor Society (NEHS) recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in English literature and a strong commitment to academic achievement. Membership is awarded to students who maintain high grades in English, show outstanding literacy skills, and uphold a strong overall GPA. NEHS chapters exist in many schools around the world and celebrate students who value reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking. Our NEHS chapter promotes both academic excellence and community involvement. Members are encouraged not only to excel in their studies, but also to give back through service, leadership, and literacy focused activities within the school community.
NEHS at QSID
The NEHS chapter at QSID was founded by:
• Asmira … (President 2023-2024)
• Sam Carter (President 2024-2025)
• Raisa Hibbs (President 2025-2026)
Their goal was to create a student organization that celebrates achievement in English while also building community through service, collaboration, and school involvement. Since its founding, the chapter has continued to grow and contribute to many school events and initiatives.
What We Do
NEHS is more than an academic honor society, it is also a service-oriented group. Throughout the year, members organize and support events that bring the school community together, promote literacy, and encourage student engagement.
Cookie Swap
One of our most popular community building events is the NEHS Cookie Swap. Families bring 24 homemade cookies and gather to trade with one another. Each participant leaves with a variety of cookies baked by fellow students. This event is a fun and relaxed way to connect, share, and take a short break from academic pressure while building friendships.
Winter Festival Support
NEHS members volunteer with the Parent Support Group (PSG) during the school’s Winter Festival. We help decorate the gym and prepare the space to create a festive and welcoming environment for students, families, and staff. This collaboration allows us to support larger school events and contribute to the wider school community.
Literacy Week Activities
During Literacy Week, NEHS members actively support school wide literacy celebrations. We help support the Literacy committee in our school. Our contributions include:
• Delivering morning announcements
• Volunteering during literacy activities
• Helping organize and support literacy-focused events
• Contributing ideas for engagement and participation
These activities reflect the core purpose of NEHS: promoting a love of language, reading, and communication.
Annual Chili Cook-Off
The NEHS Chili Cook-Off has become a valued school tradition. Students, staff, and families are invited to prepare and submit a pot of chili. Attendees can taste different entries and vote in various categories. This event is organized in collaboration with the Parent Support Group (PSG) and provides an opportunity for the school community to come together, socialize, and enjoy a break from academics in a friendly, welcoming setting.
